Journaling

I hope you are all well today, and I appreciate the questions you asked in the comments, and I will get to those, but first I’d like to go back to the textbook from your reading yesterday. On page 544, in the review, there is a “Life Skill” activity.

It tells us to “Keep a calendar and a journal. It also tells us to “write in advance all the tests, reports, projects, and extracurricular activities that you have coming up for a month.”

Then, it tells us to write in our journal how we feel each day, and asks us to see if there are any patterns.

Do you find it strange that this idea of journaling how we feel each day is in the section about our Immune System? If there really is a connection between our Immune System and upcoming tests, work, etc., then do you think it is it a good idea to journal? (Disclaimer: we are going to be journaling for this class)

Task: In the comments, please let me know your thoughts on journaling, since there are so many options for how it can be done. Video, speaking, writing on paper, writing on white boards and taking a picture, Google Docs, etc. Tell me what makes journaling easiest for you?

As I think about journaling feelings, I remembered my wife shared with me a very recent podcast episode by Brene Brown, and I invite you to listen to it here. (Please let me know if you can’t access the link).

There is another MedCram update if you are interested in more specifics about the Immune System, this video addresses questions asked by Mana and Sarah from yesterday’s comments.

Oh, and I shared yesterday’s post with Dr. Preston, and he tweeted about it. You can see that here if you are interested.

  1. I don't find it strange that the idea of journaling each day is in the section about our Immune System.I think it is a good idea to journal because many people might forget about what tests or quizzes they could have coming up, and journaling down beforehand can enhance study habits and prepare you for you upcoming test/quiz. Journaling can connect to the brain because you are getting your thoughts down on paper, so relating to the Immune System isn't a shock to the system, as there is ways you can link the Immune System to the brain. I think journaling is great because it prepares you for the future and it helps you dump out you thoughts on paper, almost like a brain dump which you can look back at. For me, writing on paper is the easiest for journaling because you ingrain the material in your head as you are physically writing down thoughts onto paper, instead of typing. Writing on paper feels more natural because there is no spell check, no fancy print, just you and your thoughts. Overall, keeping a journal is a great idea.

  2. I think journaling is a good way to stay organized and get all your thoughts out, with school it is super helpful because you can make your self a little planner with all the things you have to do for a certain class. I've done it before and it made me less stressed out cause I know what I have to do, instead of putting it aside. When I journal I like to write it on a piece of paper because I feel organized.

  10. I personally have not journaled since around the third grade, but my sister does occasionally and she loves it. Journaling has lots of uses and benefits such as staying organized and being more prepared. It can also be used as a therapy or coping mechanism with daily stresses to release your thoughts and emotions. Both the emotional and orderly benefits of journaling can relate to the immune system. When you are stressed and tense the body's functions and even the immune system are impacted,by being able to release your emotions and keep yourself organized you are less susceptible to stress. I think that journaling on paper is the most traditional way and is fairly simple, but journaling on video like talking to a camera does interest me.

  11. I do not find It strange that this Journalism comes from our immune system because all of the systems of our body are connected and since we are the only living thing capable of questioning our own existence then it doesn't surprise me that our functions are weird. I think that Journaling is something you can do if you want to, its not for everybody but some people get great satisfaction from it. and if it makes you feel better then go right ahead.

  12. I think that keeping a journal would be a good way to stay organized while classes are all online. I do think it would be weird to post it everytime you write something in it because other people have their own ideas.

  13. I think that Journaling can be a great way to stay organized and on top of all your assignments. I think that it is also a good way to express your feelings and just letting everything out. also it is a very good way to reduce stress sometimes, because it helps you get on top of your life and all your work. less stress will probably have a good effect on your immune system because stress causes strain on your body.

  20. I have not done journalism. But I feel like it maybe could be a good thing to do to help yourself be organized. I also think its not for everyone so some people are going to like and some not so much.

  26. I really enjoy journaling and think it is a great way to track progress and goals. Journaling can benefit everyone, and can be used for help in keeping track of how we are doing physically, mentally, emotionally, how we are handling things, and it's good to look back on how we are feeling. Journaling is a great way to express feelings and talk about really anything.

  29. I do not find it strange that this assignment is in the immune system section because our immune system is connected our stress levels wich can be affected by schoolwork. I dont think its a good idea to keep a journal of all our schoolwork on a daily basis, if we´re only focusing on our immune sytstems. If I were to do this I would probably only up date my journal once a month or so. I believe that if I were to write in my journal daily it would not be a productive use of my time.

  30. I think journalling is a good way for us to show what we know and don't know. It is also useful so we can be organized while displaying our thoughts. Journalling is easiest for me when we are given bullet points on key things we should be writing down. For example, if a bullet point said "neurons" we would know to summarize the lesson you taught us on how neurons work. I also think handwriting the notes is easiest because that helps us retain the information. It would help if we get to choose how to structure our notes, because not everybody likes cornell notes.

  32. Journaling connected to the immune system doesn't seem strange to me, as a big part of overcoming illness is having the will to keep living. If someone's life is happy and less stressed because of journaling, their immune system will be healthier. Because of this, then yes we should journal. Journaling will help us out in the long run even though we may complain about it at first. Journaling will be a great way for us to remove some stress from our lives of having to go based on just memory of upcoming assignments.

  33. I think that is a little weird. But then again the immune system has a lot to do with our health. I think it would be a good idea to journal. That way we could track and learn from our own bodies. If we journal we might have evidence and data. Then later on we can see why this has to do with the Immune System. I think you should leave our journaling options open to us. Everyone takes notes on different platforms, paper, etc. People also take notes differently. Just because one way of notes works well for you it might not be best for others. Everyone learns differently. :)
