Wednesday 12/20

Today we created a graphic organizer for Chapter 9, Understanding Drugs and Medicines. We read the chapter as a class and almost finished the chapter.

Tasha has a poll for you to complete... click here.

Week 4: Understanding Drugs and Medicines: Last school day of 2017

Today we will spend 20 minutes reading the chapter and working on our graphic organizer together. After the 20 minutes, I would like you to finish reading the chapter and filling in the rest of the graphic organizer the way you see fit.

Then your assignment is to Answer the review questions on page 229 in a new blog post titled: "Textbook: Drugs as Medicines". Please include  a picture of your graphic organizer in the blog post along with your answers.

Here are some interesting topics to look into once you are finished. If you do look into them, make a new blog post titled "Understanding Drugs and Medicines: In-Depth questions", and write 3-5 questions that you have by comparing the new information from the websites to what you already know...

3. Answer the questions on page 221#1-9 in new blog post titled Textbook: Drugs. Take a photo of your graphic organizer and put that into the post as well. (20 min)

(if you finish early, study the Circulatory System by testing yourself and re-drawing the entire system

or you can work on missing assignments...)

Fantastic Friday

Hopefully it has been for you. Please come in get your chrome book and sit down. The opening blog post topic is on the board. Please do a quick blog post and answer the question.

When you are finished with the blog post, please begin studying/practicing drawing the Nervous system.

Today we will take the nervous system diagram quiz at 2:25. You will have 10 minutes to take the test. When you are finished with the test, please work on one of the other assignments from this class quietly on your chrome book.

2:35, you will get with your next skit partner and design a skit showing passive, aggressive, and assertive styles of communication. Please just choose one situation and show all three examples.

At 2:55, we will begin the show. That’s right, you have only 20 minutes to design your next skit. I wish you the best of luck, sort of, I like it when people fail and then learn from their mistakes.

Communication Styles

Yesterday we started the skits based on Positive Self Talk, which is a good way to help boost your self esteem. It's not always easy to do on your own however, and to get good at it takes practice. To get practice, you have to have a lot of challenges. To get really good at positive self talk, you need good coaches (the people around you) and many fails to learn from.

Today you will get more challenges in which you can set yourself up for failure. I hope you fail today. It can be a great learning experience. If you see someone fail today, be there for them and encourage them.

Here is today's agenda:
1. Review and Update your blog post about your goals from yesterday. Make any changes you can think of. (5 minutes)
2. Read pages 55 and 56, get out a sheet of paper, and make a grid over the whole thing with 4 columns and 3 rows.
3. Create your own brainstorm of Table 1 on page 56, using your own responses.
4. Finish skits
5. Give your feedback to each group (each group read your feedback)
6. New blog post: "Positive Self Talk Skits": "Go Fishing" on your own for issues that came up during the creation and execution of the Skit you just did.
7. New groups for the next round of skits
8. In your new groups, the first task is to draw the nervous system on a white board as a group. This is your time to practice and clarify what you don't know...
9. The next task is to create a new skit showing a situation, passive, aggressive, and assertive communication styles based on your brainstorms.

Outdoor activities/data collection

For the past two days, we have gone out during health and math class to make up games to play with a soccer ball and keep track of the points. It has been a really fun experience to get some energy out, be loud, be competitive, and try to take notes with all of the distractions around.

To collect the data, I just printed out the attendance roster and we used as a spreadsheet. Each student kept track of all of the points. I’m ready to take this to the next level and have some data analysis be done on the data that we collected. That should be the next step.

For Wednesday’s activities, I am grading the data collection sheets on completion/effort. I’m using a 1 to 10 scale.

For Thursday’s activities, I am grading the data on completion, and time on task/making sure the game is being played. Being off and away talking with other people or delaying the game in other ways means points being taken away from you.

Wacky Wednesday

It felt kind of wacky today, the weather is warm the smoke has cleared away from our area, I don’t know, it just seemed like a good title.

So as I’m sitting here trying to figure out what I want you guys to do today, I guess I should figure out what my goal for you is. Bottom line: I want you to think. So to do that, I ask that you help make each other think. In order to think the way that I’m talking about, you need to get really good at asking questions. You need to be able to see patterns. You need to be able to “connect the dots”. I want you to be able to challenge other peoples ideas, but be kind about it.

I want you to develop self-awareness, and empathy. I want you to be able to set goals for yourself, and be able to measure your progress towards those goals. Before we begin the skits today, start the class off by telling me what some of your goals are. Make a blog post called my goals. Take 10 minutes and think about everything in your life and tell what you want.

Song: Migraine (here are the lyrics)

Now, keeping that in mind, make your skits today worthwhile. You have an opportunity to develop some serious personal skills by showing your best self during your skit. Ask some good questions of yourself. Give the other people in the room the gift of seeing who you truly are. It takes a lot of courage. Be courageous.

After the skits:
Read the poem Richard Cory from Dr. Preston‘s website. When you’re done with it, write a reaction to it in a new blog post you choose the title. See if you can relate the poem to some aspect of health given what you know thus far, and write at least three questions that you have about the poem.
After that, please use the rest of the time in class to practice your nervous system drawing, catch up on any blog posts you’re behind with, and or work on any textbook assignments for this class that you are behind on.

T2W3 Tuesday

Mental Health
Beginning Class assignment:

  • Read pages 50 to 54 and answer the questions from page 54 on a blog post titled textbook: Building Your Self-Esteem. (20-25 minutes)

Today you will be designing and acting out a skit. The skit will show two things: it will show an example of negative self talk, and an example of positive self talk, regarding a given situation.

Example situations:
  1. Really negative comment on Instagram post
  2. Injured and can’t do something you love doing.
  3. Get left behind by friends (excluded).
  4. You do something on purpose that you feel really badly about.
  5. You have a group assignment that you really don’t want to have to do.
You will meet with your group where you all choose, and develop a skit with 2 parts: Negative/ Positive

You will also develop the rubric by which you will be graded.

Next question: Allow video or no?

Health: term 2 week 3 Monday

Welcome back you all! Today we are going to start off with a game, so be ready to go outside to the practice soccer field right when class begins. Don’t bring your phone or headphones, you won’t need them.

When we come back in from the game, we will do a little fishing. When the fishing is over, you will write a blog post about the game, which should only take 5 to 7 minutes.

After the blog post has been written, we are going to discuss the content from your reading assignments on Friday, and I have an assessment for you to take regarding that content.

We began talking about mental illness: what’s next?

We covered a lot of material with Miss Amy. Today we are going to spend some time processing it, and learning some technological skills so that we can share our new knowledge in a very professional way.

Today will be dedicated to continuing to be effective communicators.

The work today is going to require you to be creative, reflective, cooperative, and focused.

1. Survey
2. Groups from yesterday: you will get a large sheet of paper and a set of markers. For 15 minutes, you will create a bubble map of Miss Amy’s presentation and everything you guys can remember from it. You may work inside the classroom or outside of the classroom during this time.
3. Computer science “lecture”

4. Blog work: today you will embed a new google drawing into a new blog post.

5. Go back to your Google drawing and create a bubble map with the top three most important topics from your bubble map (in your opinion). Please include 3 to 5 details for each of the topics. Please verbally let me know when you are finished.
6. Read pages 11 to 16 in the textbook, and answer the questions on page 16, #1 through 11, in a new blog post titled Textbook: Health and Wellness.

Period 5 Week 2 Health

Welcome back! Today we will start with a practice quiz on the nervous system, and then go over the answers. By practicing, you will get better and better, and do just fine when the test comes.

After the quiz, we will go outside for an activity called "The Orb". It should take us about 15 minutes.

Then we will come back inside and "Go Fishing" based on "The Orb".

After fishing, I would like you to write a blog post titled:

"My reaction to The Orb"

(we only got this far...)

Period 2 Week 2 Health
